Route 66 Historic Route Begins Sign
Feeling satisfied and ready for the adventure ahead, I made my way to Adams Street, just a short drive from the restaurant, to capture a photo of the famous “Route 66 Begins” sign. This iconic marker holds a special place in the hearts of many travelers. Installed in the early days of the highway’s establishment, the sign has been a symbol of the freedom and adventure that Route 66 promised. Over the years, it has seen countless travelers stop to snap a photo, each one adding to the tapestry of stories and memories woven along this historic route.

As I stood there, camera in hand, I couldn’t help but think of the countless adventurers who had started their journeys from this very spot. From the Dust Bowl migrants seeking a better life in California to the modern-day road trippers yearning to experience a piece of Americana, the “Route 66 Begins” sign has been a silent witness to their dreams and aspirations. With the obligatory snapshot taken, my journey along the historic Route 66 commenced, filled with a sense of connection to all those who had come before me.
Route 66 Museum in Pontiac, Illinois
My first major stop was Pontiac, Illinois, where I visited the Route 66 Museum. This museum is a must-see for any Route 66 enthusiast, offering a deep dive into the history and culture of this legendary highway. The exhibits were everything I had hoped for and more, solidifying the museum’s reputation as an essential stop.

My visit to the Route 66 Museum in Pontiac was an enriching experience, providing a comprehensive understanding of why this highway holds such a special place in American history and culture. It’s a place where the spirit of Route 66 is preserved and celebrated, making it a must-visit for anyone embarking on this historic journey.
Giant Statues in Atlanta, Illinois
Continuing my journey, I arrived in Atlanta, Illinois. This quaint town is home to three giant statues, perfect for photo ops. Each statue has its own unique story and charm, drawing visitors from far and wide to capture a piece of roadside Americana.
As I strolled through the town, I couldn’t help but marvel at the towering figures.

More Giants to Come
A local shopkeeper shared some exciting news: soon, there would be seven giants within a two-block radius, adding even more charm to this already interesting stop.
The shopkeeper’s news about the upcoming additions to the giant family added an extra layer of excitement to my visit. These statues are part of a larger effort to preserve and celebrate the whimsical roadside attractions that once dotted Route 66. The town of Atlanta is committed to restoring and showcasing these giants, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the quirky charm of these oversized figures.
Taking pictures of each of the giants, I imagined how these towering figures must have captivated the imaginations of travellers over the years. They stand as playful reminders of a time when road trips were grand adventures and the journey was just as important as the destination. With plans for four more giants to join the existing trio, Atlanta, Illinois, is set to become an even more enchanting stop along Route 66, promising delight and nostalgia for all who visit.
Arrival in Springfield, Illinois
As I approached Springfield, I made sure to visit the Cozy Dog Drive-In. Known for their famous corn dogs, this spot has a unique place in Route 66 lore. The founder of Cozy Dog was also a key figure in the establishment of the Route 66 Museum in Pontiac, adding an extra layer of significance to my visit.
By 4 PM, I checked into my hotel in Springfield, Illinois, conveniently located just a 10-minute drive from the Cozy Dog Drive-In. Reflecting on the day’s travels, I realized I had covered 420 kilometres (about 250 miles), starting from Hammond, Indiana, and ending in the welcoming arms of Springfield.
Today’s journey was a perfect blend of iconic eats, historic stops, and unique roadside attractions. If you’re planning a trip down Route 66, make sure to include these stops on your itinerary—they truly encapsulate the spirit of the Mother Road.
