Day Three of My Route 66 Adventure: From Springfield to Rolla, Missouri

Today’s adventure starts out in Springfield, Illinois, a city rich in history and charm, has me passing by the Gateway Arch, and wraps up in Rolla, Missouri, a cozy town nestled in the heart of the Ozarks.

Departure: Route 66 Springfield, Illinois

My journey began bright and early at 8 AM from my cozy hotel in Springfield, Illinois. After a hearty breakfast, I packed my bags, double-checked my Route 66 itinerary, and set off for another day of exploration. The excitement was palpable as I knew the iconic Route 66 would be my guide for much of the day.

On the Road: Interstates and Route 66

Navigating my way out of Springfield, I hopped on the interstate with a sense of anticipation and excitement. My goal was to experience as much of the historic Route 66 as possible. This legendary road, often referred to as the “Main Street of America,” has a storied past that beckons travelers with promises of nostalgia and adventure.

As I cruised along, I eagerly sought out sections of Route 66, detouring whenever the opportunity arose. Each time I left the interstate, I was rewarded with a journey through small, quaint towns that seemed frozen in time. The charming storefronts, vintage gas stations, and classic diners painted a vivid picture of a bygone era. These towns, with their welcoming locals and unique histories, offered a stark contrast to the monotony of the interstate.

The scenic landscapes along Route 66 were equally captivating. Rolling hills, expansive farmlands, and picturesque prairies unfolded before my eyes, creating a beautiful tapestry of Americana. I often found myself pulling over to capture photos or simply to take in the serene beauty of the surroundings. There was something profoundly peaceful about driving on this historic route, where the pace of life seemed to slow down.

Switching between the interstate and Route 66 became a delightful rhythm of my journey. The interstate allowed for quick travel, but it was the stretches of the old road that I truly savored. Each segment of Route 66 I traversed told its own story, whether through a quirky roadside attraction or a historic landmark. These moments of discovery and reflection added a rich layer of meaning to my adventure.

The allure of Route 66 lies not just in its physical path, but in the spirit of exploration and the celebration of America’s diverse heritage. Every mile I traveled on this iconic road deepened my appreciation for the journey and the countless stories woven into the fabric of Route 66.

Lunch Break: Collinsville, Illinois

By midday, I reached just north of Collinsville, Illinois, where a quick lunch stop at McDonald’s was in order. It was a welcome break, providing a moment to refuel and stretch my legs. The fast food may not have been gourmet, but the convenience allowed me to get back on the road swiftly.

Crossing the Mississippi: Entering St. Louis

With lunch behind me, I rejoined Interstate 55 and headed south, anticipating the grand entrance into St. Louis. Crossing the mighty Mississippi River was a highlight, and the sight of the Gateway Arch looming on the horizon was awe-inspiring. I pulled into the tour bus parking area, and despite the throngs of tourists, I managed to snap a quick photo of the iconic monument. The hustle and bustle of the area added to the vibrant atmosphere of this famous city.

The St Louis Gateway Arch: Gateway to the West

It’s official: I’ve passed the Gateway Arch the iconic symbol marking the expansion to the West. This monumental moment was a significant milestone in my journey along Route 66. Seeing the Arch, I felt a profound connection to the countless travelers who had ventured this way before me, each embarking on their own unique adventures.

It also brought back memories of previous times I’ve traveled by the Arch, including a cherished trip with my Mom and Dad when we drove out west when I was a kid. This blend of past and present experiences added a deep sense of continuity and nostalgia to my journey.

The Arch, with its sweeping curves and majestic presence, symbolizes the spirit of exploration and the boundless opportunities that lie ahead. As I snapped a few photos to capture the memory, I couldn’t help but feel a renewed sense of excitement and anticipation for the next leg of my journey. This was more than just a stop along the way; it was a moment of reflection and inspiration, a reminder of the rich history and vibrant culture that make this road trip so extraordinary.

Back on the Road: Interstate 44 and Route 66

Leaving St. Louis behind, I continued my journey on Interstate 44. However, whenever possible, I veered off to travel along Route 66, especially near the Six Flags exit. Driving on Route 66 provided a much more relaxed and picturesque experience compared to the busy interstate. The nostalgic charm of the old road was undeniable.

Through the Ozarks: A Scenic Drive

My route took me through parts of the Ozarks, offering breathtaking views of rolling hills and lush greenery. The undulating terrain, blanketed in rich foliage, created a picturesque landscape that seemed to stretch endlessly. The Ozarks’ natural beauty was a stark contrast to the urban landscapes I had encountered earlier in the day, with their bustling streets and towering buildings. Here, in the heart of nature, the air felt fresher, and the pace of life seemed to slow down.

As I drove through this enchanting region, I marveled at the diversity of scenery that makes the Route 66 journey so special. The vibrant greens of the forests were interspersed with clear, sparkling streams and tranquil lakes, each turn revealing a new facet of the Ozarks’ splendor. Occasionally, I would spot wildlife – a deer grazing by the roadside or a hawk soaring overhead – further emphasizing the area’s untouched charm.

The Ozarks provided a perfect setting for reflection and relaxation. The gentle curves of the road and the serene environment encouraged me to roll down my windows and fully immerse myself in the experience. The sweet scent of pine mixed with the earthy aroma of the forest floor, creating an intoxicating blend that heightened my appreciation for this beautiful region.

Driving through the Ozarks was a reminder of the ever-changing landscapes that Route 66 offers, from urban centers to rural retreats. It highlighted the journey’s true essence: a celebration of America’s natural and cultural diversity. This segment of the trip was not just about reaching a destination but about embracing the journey and the countless memorable moments it brings.

Snack Stop: Cuba, Missouri

As I made my way through Missouri, I decided to stop at Dottie’s Restaurant in Cuba for a quick snack. This quaint eatery was a delightful find, offering a cozy ambiance and friendly service. It was the perfect place to take a brief respite before continuing my drive.

Final Destination: Rolla, Missouri

The final stretch of the day’s journey was met with a bit of a delay due to an accident on Interstate 44. Despite the setback, I eventually made it to my hotel in Rolla, Missouri, where I checked in and settled down for the night. The day had been long, but the experiences and memories made it all worthwhile.

Looking Ahead: To Oklahoma City

Tomorrow, I’ll be heading west on Interstate 44 towards Oklahoma City. It’s bound to be another busy day filled with interesting stops and new adventures. Stay tuned for more updates as I continue my journey along the historic Route 66!
